Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) marked its 32nd foundation anniversary, highlighting both its operational growth and future expansion plans aimed at improving urban transport connectivity across the National Capital Region.
Over the past two decades, the metro network has expanded significantly from its initial operational routes to a system now spanning more than 416 kilometres with over 300 stations. It has become one of the primary public transport systems for daily commuters in Delhi and surrounding regions.
During the anniversary event, officials discussed the proposed Phase 5B expansion, which is expected to further extend metro connectivity to several outer and fast-growing urban areas of Delhi. The proposed plan includes seven new corridors intended to enhance connectivity in regions such as Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur, Rohini Sector-34, and Kishan Garh. These areas have seen rapid residential and commercial development, increasing demand for improved public transport infrastructure.
According to the outlined plan, four priority corridors under Phase 5B are targeted for completion by 2029, subject to approvals and implementation timelines. The expansion is expected to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters in under-served parts of the city.
The event was attended by senior officials from DMRC and representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, including Union Minister Tokhan Sahu. Public representatives and officials noted the role of coordinated planning in the continued expansion of the metro network.
The DMRC’s growth over the years has been shaped by phased development projects aimed at addressing increasing urban mobility needs. With ongoing and planned extensions, the metro system is expected to further integrate peripheral areas into the city’s transport grid, supporting higher commuter demand in the coming years.
