A 28-year-old man from Krishnagiri allegedly attempted suicide after being overwhelmed by rumours about actor-turned-politician Vijay and the performance of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in the ongoing Assembly elections, according to a report by The Times of India.
The incident occurred shortly before vote counting began, when unverified claims suggested that TVK might fall short in the race. Police said the man, identified as K Mahendran, an ardent supporter of Vijay, became deeply distressed after hearing the rumours and allegedly slit his throat near his residence.
Eyewitnesses rushed to his aid and took him to the Krishnagiri Government Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently undergoing intensive treatment. Doctorsare closely monitoring his condition.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading or believing unverified information, particularly during sensitive periods such as elections. They also emphasised the importance of mental health awareness and seeking help during emotional distress.
