The salary and allowances received by MLAs are also different in different states.

Counting of votes is going on in 5 states of the country. The results of the assembly elections held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will come by today (Monday) evening. There will be many candidates who will become MLAs for the first time and will raise the voice of the public in the House. MLAs also get many facilities along with their salary. The salary of MLAs is different in every state because it is decided by the state government. For this also a bill has to be presented in the Legislative Assembly. Only after this the salary increases. But the question is whether the salary of MLAs becomes fixed as soon as they win the elections?

The rule says that the salary of MLAs is not fixed merely by winning the elections. Further process also has to be completed. After counting of all the rounds of assembly elections, the returning officer declares the winner and only then the winning candidate is given a certificate.

When does the salary meter start?

No MLA is entitled to salary until he officially takes oath and assumes his post. The oath taking process takes place after the election results. Despite being a part of it, he is officially called an MLA. Their salary and allowances start from the date of oath.

Be it Bengal or Assam, where is the salary of MLA?

  • Bengal: MLAs get different salaries in every state. First let us talk about West Bengal. In the year 2023, Mamata Banerjee's government had announced to increase the salary of MLAs by Rs 40 thousand per month. After the increase, the salary of the MLA here became Rs 1.21 lakh per month.
  • Assam: The salaries of Assam MLAs increased in 2018. Salary increased from Rs 1.07 lakh to Rs 1.60 lakh. At present the MLA here is getting Rs 1.60 lakh every month including salary and allowances.
  • Tamil Nadu: The total amount of monthly salary and allowances to Tamil Nadu MLAs is up to Rs 1,50,000. It has a basic salary of Rs 1,05,000 per month and along with it he gets constituency allowance, telephone allowance and conveyance allowance.
  • Kerala: Kerala is one of those states in the country where the salary and allowances of MLAs are very low. Here the MLA gets Rs 70 thousand per month.
  • Puducherry: The MLA here gets Rs 1 lakh 5 thousand every month as salary and allowances. He is also entitled to receive a daily allowance of Rs 2,500 for attending meetings and an enhanced pension of Rs 31,000 per month after the end of his tenure.

How does salary increase?

Every state government decides the salaries and allowances of its MLAs itself. Salaries are regularly increased keeping in mind inflation through amendments in the State Pay and Allowances Act. In most cases, salary increases are recommended by a committee. Apart from their basic salary, MLAs also get allowances for work done in their constituencies, hiring assistants and telephone bills. MLAs can also avail a number of facilities including government accommodation, free travel across the country, access to medical facilities and loans to buy vehicles.
