Actor Vijay's party TVK has caused a major upset in Tamil Nadu elections. In the initial trends, TVK is leading on 103 seats, AIADMK alliance is leading on 78 seats and DMK alliance is leading on 53 seats. TVK has made a big dent in Dravidian politics with 32% vote share.
Chennai: Counting of votes for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is going on and actor Vijay's party 'Tamizhag Vetri Kazhagam' (TVK) has created a stir in the state politics. According to initial trends, TVK is leading on 103 seats. At the same time, the ruling DMK alliance is leading on 53 seats and the AIADMK alliance is leading on 78 seats.
This marks a major upheaval in the political history of Tamil Nadu. Barring Chennai city, the TVK has managed to overtake the DMK alliance in almost all areas of the state. Although the AIADMK is performing well in AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami's strongholds, i.e. western and northern Tamil Nadu, TVK has shown its strength at the entire state level.
Vote share figures show that this rise of TVK has made a big dent in the vote bank of Dravidian parties like DMK and AIADMK. Vijay's party currently has 32% votes, which is equal to the DMK alliance. AIADMK alliance got 30% vote share. 118 seats are required for majority in the 234-seat assembly. If current trends continue, TVK may emerge as the largest single party in Tamil Nadu. It will become clear in the coming few hours whether this election result is going to usher in a new era in Dravidian politics.
