New Delhi: The counting of votes for two assembly constituencies — byelections — in Karnataka began on Monday with both ruling Congress and opposition BJP leading on one seat each, as per Election Commission data.
In Davanagere South constituency, BJP’s Srinivasa T Dasakariyappa is leading over Congress candidate Samarth Mallikarjun by 8,539 votes.
BJP leads in Davanagere South
After six rounds of counting Dasakariyappa has polled 25,728 votes while Mallikarjun received 17,189 votes. In all counting will be held in 21 rounds.
Congress is leading in Bagalkot by 10,534 votes after 12 rounds of counting. Congress candidate Umesh Hullappa Meti has so far polled 50,432 votes while BJP’s Charantimath Veerabhadray has recived 39,898 votes. Eleven rounds of counting is still left.
Why the bypolls were held
The bypoll in Bagalkot was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress MLA H Y Meti. The Davanagere South bypoll was necessitated by the death of veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
