- A joint investigation by the US Congress begins
- Threats to national security and data theft
- The company is stuck in the sound of ‘fast and cheap’
Airbnb Anysphere US investigation 2026 : Current digital and AI (Artificial Intelligence) era, as technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, it becomes a national security concern. The world famous travel and hospitality company ‘Airbnb’ (Airbnb) is currently in a big political and legal controversy. The company’s use of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) models for its customer service and other functions has sparked a stir in the US. The matter has become so serious that two major committees of the US Congress have directly demanded an explanation from the CEO of the company.
Joint Action of the US Parliament
The joint investigation was announced by Andrew Garbarino, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and John Mulnar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China. He has sent letters to both Airbnb and Anysphere (maker of cursors) in strong terms. The letters ask the companies why they chose Chinese AI models over American alternatives. Not only this, these companies have also been asked to submit records of their conversations with Chinese AI providers. A warning has also been given that if necessary, the senior officers of the company will have to appear personally and give answers.

Chinese AI models and the wall of security
The main objection of American lawmakers is that the AI models of Chinese companies are trained under China’s censorship regime. Whether it’s Alibaba’s Qwen or Moonshot AI’s Kimi, companies are attracted to these models because they’re cheaper and open-source than American ones. However, the use of this technology could expose US users’ data to China’s surveillance systems or contain hidden malware or loopholes that could be exploited.
The strategy of Airbnb and Brian Chesky
Last year (December 2025), Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky explained in an interview that his customer service system runs on Alibaba’s Qwen model because it is fast and cheap. Chesky was clear that he continued to use Chinese technology because American alternatives such as ChatGPT were not yet fully developed. But, the same decision has now come on the US national security radar.

The White House’s warning and the point of model distillation
Not only Airbnb, but Anisefair’s ‘Compaser 2’ model has also been questioned. The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) explained in a recent memo that Chinese AI companies are stealing data using techniques such as ‘model distillation’ based on American models. That is, China is making cheaper models using years of US research.

What will be the effect in the future?
The implications of this investigation will not be limited to Airbnb alone, but will have far-reaching implications for tech companies around the world. If the allegations are proven, the US government will impose more stringent restrictions on Chinese technology, which will strengthen the security of user data. However, until then, Airbnb has to prove that its users’ data is safe.
