An expert has revealed how to make tinned baked beans taste better by adding one simple ingredient, and it's not a spice, seasoning or sauce. Baked beans are a British classic, and they are bought every week by millions of shoppers across the country. There are well-known brands such as Heinz and Branston's, while each supermarket also has its own brand version of the simple product.

Many people like to enjoy baked beans as they are, simply heating them up in the sweet tomato sauce that comes in the tin. However, some people like to add more to their tin of baked beans to give them more flavour and richness. Popular choices for this include things like paprika, chilli powder and black pepper. Some people even add things like Worcestershire sauce to their baked beans. However, one cooking expert, who has written ten cookbooks, has revealed the ingredient she uses to make her baked beans taste "astonishing".

Ivy Manning of Simply Recipes said that Spanish chorizo is her secret ingredient when it comes to baked beans. She said that this simple ingredient, which is available in most major UK supermarkets, takes tinned baked beans to the next level and makes them taste homemade.

"I was thrilled to discover that when I added this smoky cured meat to my favourite canned baked beans, it elevated them and had my guests clamouring for the recipe," she revealed.

To add chorizo to her baked beans, she simply sautes it in a pan before she adds the baked beans. She praises the trick as it takes just a minute and makes all the difference.

She instructs home cooks to remove the papery casing from the chorizo before adding it to the pan, and then cut it into bite-sized pieces.

"I sauté the chopped chorizo in a dry pan over medium heat until the sausage's fat has collected in a pool," she revealed. She lets it cook for about five minutes until the pan slightly browns, then adds the baked beans and cooks them for ten minutes.

Experts and baked beans fans have previously shared their hacks for making baked beans taste better, and some have suggested adding meat before. One expert said that cooking baked beans with strips of bacon makes for a simple yet delicious dish.
