According to reports, several women were allegedly sexually assaulted in public during the 'Alue-Do' festival held in the Oramudu community of Delta State in March. In some international media reports it has even been called a “rape festival”.

What is the whole matter?
According to France 24 and other international reports, women were chased by groups of men in public places during the festival. It is alleged that the clothes of many women were forcibly torn and they were sexually assaulted in the crowd. Some people present during the incident are accused of playing the role of spectators instead of stopping the violence. According to reports, this crowd included a large number of men along with some minor boys. It is being told that the victimized women also include students from a nearby university. Some had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
The student narrated her ordeal
A victim of the incident, said to be a student, narrated her harrowing experience to the media. According to her, as soon as she reached the area on a motorcycle, the crowd recognized her. The victim said that people started shouting, “Catch her, she is a woman.” After this the crowd surrounded him. She alleged that a large number of people pulled her clothes, forcibly stripped her and performed indecent acts on her body. She kept shouting for help, but the crowd did not stop. According to the victim, a passerby later intervened and saved her from there. During this time his mobile phone was also snatched. She said that she is going through physical pain and mental trauma after the incident.

Police arrested many people
Delta State Police have confirmed that several suspects have been arrested in the case. A local community leader and four youths are said to be among those arrested. Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said strict action was being taken against the accused and all culprits would be prosecuted. He said that in view of the seriousness of the case, Police Commissioner Aina Adesola has directed the arrested accused to be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Human rights organizations expressed concern
Women's rights activists and social organizations have described this incident as extremely worrying. Rita Aiki, a gender rights advocate associated with the women's rights organization "Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative", said that when such incidents happen in public and people see it as a spectacle, it is a sign of dangerous normalization in the society.
