Micromanagement is often considered one of the most counterproductive workplace behaviours, as excessive supervision can significantly impact employee morale, creativity, and overall performance. Constant monitoring, frequent check-ins, and unnecessary control over minor tasks can leave employees feeling distrusted and emotionally drained. Over time, this management style may contribute to heightened workplace anxiety, reduced job satisfaction, and burnout. Experts often stress that autonomy and flexibility are essential for fostering productivity, especially in modern work environments where employees perform best when trusted to manage their responsibilities.

Employee on controlling boss

A Reddit post recently went viral after an employee shared his frustrating experience with what he described as an excessively controlling manager. According to the redditor, his boss constantly monitored his activity, even texting his personal phone if he appeared away on Microsoft Teams for just a few minutes. The employee also claimed his manager regularly insisted that he keep his camera on during meetings, including one-on-one calls.

The redditor explained that although he had access to two office locations, his manager required him to work from the farther office simply because that was where the manager was based. During one recent in-office day, after attending meetings and a team lunch, the employee had a gap in his schedule before his next call. Wanting a change of scenery, he moved from his desk to one of the office’s alternative seating areas while remaining on the same floor.

Employee expresses annoyance at micromanaging boss

To avoid confusion, the employee informed his manager about the move in advance. Initially, his boss appeared supportive, responding that he was fine with it as long as the employee was participating. However, the following morning, the manager scheduled an early call to address the issue, expressing dissatisfaction with the employee’s decision to relocate. The boss reportedly argued that being in the office was about team bonding, communication, and integration rather than simply fulfilling attendance requirements.

Frustrated by what he viewed as unreasonable demands, the employee firmly pushed back. The redditor stated that he reminded his manager he was already meeting office expectations by being physically present and participating in required activities, arguing that mandatory socialising or remaining fixed at a desk all day was not part of his job requirement.

The employee also alleged that his manager had made unsettling personal comments in the past, further adding to his discomfort. While relatively new to the company, the redditor admitted he feels increasingly exhausted by the constant oversight and is uncertain about how to navigate the situation without jeopardising his position.
