Chennai: Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians are having a disappointing season this year. On Saturday (May 3), they suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, further deepening their troubles.
Failing to defend a total of 159 runs, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians also lost both matches against their historic rivals this season. With this win, CSK moved to sixth place with eight points from nine matches, while Mumbai Indians are now facing the possibility of an early exit.
Out of nine matches played, Mumbai Indians have lost seven and are currently under serious threat of elimination. However, their playoff chances are not completely over yet. Mathematically, MI can still qualify for the playoffs.
Minimum 14 points requiredA minimum of 14 points is generally required to reach the playoffs. To achieve this, Mumbai Indians must treat their remaining five matches as knockout games and win all of them.
In addition, since MI’s net run rate (NRR) is currently lower than other top teams, just winning matches will not be enough. They will also need big-margin victories to improve their net run rate in case of a points tie.
Teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Rajasthan Royals are already in a stronger position with 12 points each. For Mumbai Indians to move ahead, at least two or three of these teams must suffer a major slump, losing at least three of their remaining matches.
