New Delhi: A passenger onboard an Air Arabia flight in Chennai, opened the emergency door and jumped off the plane on Sunday morning, leaving others in the plane shocked. The aircraft was reportedly taxiing on the runway at the Chennai International Airport, when the incident happened. The plane had flown in from Sarjah.

The aircraft had not come to a complete halt, but had exited the main runway when the incident happened, said an airport official. He informed them that the plane was moving slowly away from the taxiway, when the male passenger suddenly opened the emergency door and jumped out. This act caused panic and chaos among the other people in the plane, including the crew.

No loss of life or damage to aircraft

According to a report in NDTV, which quoted a senior official at the Chennai Airport, there was no loss of life or damage to the aircraft due to the incident. The official said, “Yes, the flight was still slowly on the move as he jumped out. There was no loss of life or damage to the aircraft.”

The incident did not occur on the main runway, said the airport official.

According to an official, the passenger complained of being unwell during the flight. He reportedly vomited twice on the plane during the journey. Officials believe that his health issues might have contributed to his actions.

The pilot informed the ground staff and security immediately after the man jumped out. Acting swiftly, the CISF personnel detained him from the runway. He was then handed over to the Chennai police for further interrogation.

Runway shut, operations briefly disrupted

Following the incident, the flight operations at the airport were briefly impacted. The main runway was shut for about an hour. It remained non functional between 3:23 am to 4:23 am, as a precaution, said the airport officials. For the time being all flights were diverted to the secondary runway.

The identity of the passenger has not been confirmed by the airlines or the Chennai Airport officials. However, reports suggest that he may be from Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district.
