At least nine people lost their lives after a massive fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area early Sunday, officials confirmed.

The fire was reported at around 3:48 am in a four-storey building located in Vivek Vihar Phase I. Emergency services, including fire brigades, police, and disaster response teams, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

According to initial reports, the blaze rapidly spread across flats on the second, third, and fourth floors, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, a resident suggested that an air conditioner explosion could have sparked the incident.

Rescue teams managed to evacuate around 10 to 15 people from the building. Two individuals who suffered minor injuries were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.

Staircase Becomes Death Trap

Preliminary findings reveal that several victims were trapped while attempting to escape. Three bodies were discovered on the staircase, while five were recovered from the second floor and one from the first floor, indicating the intensity and rapid spread of the fire.

A total of 12 fire tenders were deployed to control the flames, with support from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), traffic police, and local law enforcement agencies.

Officials stated that the fire was brought under control after several hours. The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
