The cricket match between India and Pakistan is not always limited to just the game, but incidents outside the field also make headlines. Last year, during the Asia Cup, the issue of no handshake between the two teams was much discussed. Now Pakistan captain Salman Ali Aga has broken his silence on this controversy and revealed the entire incident. According to Aga, he was told just before the toss that there would be no handshake with Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. This decision was taken amid the tense atmosphere created after the Pahalgam attack.
Salman Aga told that he was not aware of this decision in advance. Before the toss, the match referee called them aside and told them that the toss process would be completed without a handshake. The Pakistani captain said that he accepted the decision without any objection and followed the instructions of the officials. However, Agha was hopeful that after the match both the teams would shake hands in the normal sporting spirit. After Pakistan’s defeat, he proceeded towards the Indian dressing room with his teammates, but there was no handshake there either.
According to Agha, the door of the Indian dressing room was closed and even after the match was over, there was no formal greeting between the two teams. Speaking on this issue, Aga said that such traditions should not be abolished in sports. He believes that international players are role models for the youth and their behavior impacts grassroots level cricket.
He said that when older players avoid normal sportsmanship gestures, young players also start adopting the same behavior in club and local matches, which does not send the right message. This incident has once again sparked a debate about the balance between sportsmanship and national duty. Some people consider India’s stand justified, while some are calling it against the spirit of the game. It is noteworthy that after this incident, there has been no handshake between the players of India and Pakistan. Even in the final of Asia Cup 2025, no friendly gesture was seen between the two teams.
