A man who attempted to rape a woman in a park after drinking alcohol and taking crack cocaine has been jailed. Khairul Amin punched, strangled and hit the woman with a stone as she walked through Peel Park in Bradford, West Yorkshire, last August.

The 36-year-old, of Moor View Drive, was given an extended 18-and-a-half-year sentence on Friday after being found guilty of attempted rape, assault and intentional strangulation by a jury in February. Amin must serve 14-and-a-half years in prison before being considered for parole, with the rest of his sentence spent on licence. At Bradford Crown Court, Judge Kirstie Watson said Amin posed a significant risk of serious harm to the public.

The court heard that Amin, who was already subject to a suspended prison sentence for possession of a bladed article and an imitation firearm, had been using crack cocaine and drinking alcohol at the time of the attack, YorkshireLive reports.

"This is an attempt stranger rape committed in the evening in a public park while you were under the influence of alcohol and crack cocaine," Judge Watson told Amin via an interpeter.

"You identified a solitary female and you approached her and despite her polite rebuff you persisted."

The judge said Amin was only being convicted for attempted rape rather than rape because she was able to fight him off.

The victim, a woman in her 30s, rang police at around 9pm on August 28 last year to report she had been attacked, sexually assaulted and strangled by an unknown man.

She suffered serious head injuries and was treated in hospital, West Yorkshire Police said.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, she said: "It has ruined my day-to-day life. I am still having flashbacks regularly.

"The defendant has no idea how this has affected every part of my life, and I hope the sentence he receives reflects the pain, trauma and loss of confidence that I have endured since the assault."

According to YorkshireLive, she also described feeling "violated and scared", saying: "I felt like I was to blame even though I had no part to play in the assault other than being the victim."

The court heard the woman suffered severe mental health problems and was terrified of going out in the dark.

After the sentencing hearing, Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "The sheer bravery and courage it took for this woman to report this to us cannot be underestimated.

"Through reporting this quickly we were able to launch a fast-paced investigation carrying out extensive enquiries to locate Amin.

"He was arrested, charged and brought before the courts all within a day.

"I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence, to please report it to us so we can take action. We have specialist officers to support you throughout the process and bring perpetrators to justice."
