Deven Bhojani is a popular face in the entertainment industry, with television shows like Khichdi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (which he also directed), and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby to his name. While many love his remarkable performances and incredible comic timing, not many are aware that the actor-director is a hardcore vegetarian. But recently, the 56-year-old shared an incident in an interview where he recalled accidentally consuming a chicken sandwich during an outing with his assistants. Although Deven loved the taste, he admitted to feeling bad about unknowingly breaking his veg diet.

Deven Bhojani’s non-veg food accident

Deven Bhojani opened up about the incident, which happened early in his career, during his appearance on the Khaane Mein Kya Hai podcast with Kunal Vijayakar. As per the actor, he was working on the 1992 film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, headlined by Aamir Khan and Ayesha Jhulka. Deven not only played a small role in the Mansoor Khan-directed movie but also assisted the team behind the scenes.

Deven Bhojani remembered that back then, he and the film crew used to spend a lot of time at the Bandra office. During breaks, four of them would visit a popular shop named Candies, where everyone would unwind in between shoots. One time, everyone ordered sandwiches from the shop, but when Deven took a bite from his one, something felt off. He did not realise that he was having a chicken sandwich.

Impressed by its unique taste, Deven Bhojani suggested to his team that they should come to the shop more often, claiming that the food was not only delicious but also cheaper. At that moment, one of his friends noted that he received a veg sandwich when he ordered a non-veg one. It was then that Deven understood that he had accidentally eaten a chicken sandwich. ‘“I loved that sandwich, but I felt terrible. It was completely unintentional. Bahut gadbad ho gaya tha,” he said with a laugh.

When Deven Bhojani tried fish

This was, however, not the first time that Deven Bhojani took a detour from his vegetarian food habits. Back in 2009, the actor, in a conversation with India Forums, revealed that he once went to a posh restaurant with his friend, where they served fish. But when the order came, he was repulsed by the smell, to which his friend replied that it was the signature smell of seafood and urged Deven to try it.

Eventually, Deven Bhojani did take a bite, but it ended up in a mess. The actor felt nauseous, ultimately throwing up. ‘All the vegetarian food that I had eaten earlier that day just came out,’ he shared, adding that the waiters simply stood there looking horrified at his condition — a scene that Deven acknowledged he would never forget.

Over the years, Deven Bhojani went on to direct popular projects like Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Sumit Sambhal Lega, and the film Commando 2. He was also a part of the Netflix drama series Scoop, starring Karisma Tanna, Harman Baweja and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in key roles.
