Cleaning household appliances can be a tiresome chore, especially since they are often overlooked and neglected. Nevertheless, giving them a thorough clean can help keep your oven running efficiently while leaving the kitchen looking spotlessly pristine.
If you're in need of a heavy-duty cleaning solution, tidying expert and TikTok creator Chantel Mila, better known as Mama Mila, has just the answer. All you require is a handful of kitchen staples to whip up a straightforward DIY paste. In a bowl, combine one cup of baking soda, half a cup of washing up liquid and a splash of water.
These three ingredients will produce a "powerful" cleaning paste that is remarkably versatile.
The paste can be applied to a variety of surfaces across both the kitchen and bathroom. It cuts through stubborn grease on ovens, hobs, sinks, and even shower glass.
Spread a thin layer of the paste onto oven surfaces using a sponge, then leave it to soak and break down any stains, spills, and food splatters. To ensure every trace of grease and grime is removed, Chantel uses a scraper tool to lift the paste and remove any stubborn residue.
Wipe away any remaining paste with water before buffing the oven glass with a microfibre cloth, reports The Mirror.
The reason this paste proves so effective is that baking soda is a brilliant grease remover owing to its alkaline properties. This helps neutralise the acid found in grease, making it considerably easier to lift during cleaning.
As baking soda is a mild abrasive, it also helps dislodge stubborn grease or food particles without causing surface damage. Combining it with washing-up liquid makes the entire cleaning process considerably more straightforward.
As washing-up liquid functions as an emulsifier, it binds to grease and oil stains, enabling them to be rinsed away with water.
Washing up liquid contains surfactants that are both hydrophilic - attracting water - and hydrophobic - repelling water and binding to oil. These surfactants bind to the grease, allowing oil and water to mix and form a stable emulsion that can then be washed away.
Should your oven require particularly intensive treatment, the paste can be left on overnight. Follow this up with a cloth and wipe down the entire oven.
If stubborn marks persist, apply white vinegar directly to the stains. Remove any lingering residue with a cloth.
