A young cricketer from Puducherry has tragically taken her own life. She was just 19 years old and a college student who was dedicated to her training in the area. Reports have identified her as Angel Gangwani, the daughter of GST superintendent Kashmir Kumar, who has been living in Chennai for the past 12 years.

According to the report, Angel was training at a coaching center in Thilaspet and had recently participated in the selection trials for the Puducherry T20 Team in Thulipet. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the final cut, which reportedly left her feeling deeply dejected. Her landlord, P. Durairaj, noted that she became increasingly withdrawn after the trials.

As reported by The Times of India, Angel had been renting a house in Sokkanathanpet, Puducherry, for the last couple of years. She was a second-year BBA student at a private college in Velrampet.

Durairaj mentioned in his complaint that Angel returned home around 8:00 PM on April 29 after cricket practice. When her coach, Kathrivel, tried to reach her later that night, she didn’t answer. Growing concerned, he went to her home and found her hanging from a ceiling fan. Durairaj and the coach quickly took her to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kathirkamam, but sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mental health awareness and well-being continue to be significant issues in sports. Athletes like Ben Stokes and Glenn Maxwell have taken time off to focus on their mental health and to raise awareness about the pressures faced in professional sports.

Stokes, for instance, took a year-long break in the summer of 2021 before the Test series against India, as he was grappling with anxiety following the death of his father, Ged, from brain cancer in 2020. He opened up about his struggles and how he coped with them in his documentary, ‘Phoenix from the Ashes.’
