When the bodies were recovered from the waters of the Baghi Dam, rescue personnel found a woman with her four-year-old son still in her arms, and not holding on to him tightly. Both are seen wearing orange coloured-life jackets.

Rescuers said both were wearing life jackets, with the child held tightly in the mother’s arms. The victims were identified as Marina Massey, 39, and her son Trishaan, who had travelled from Delhi for a vacation and were among those who died after the cruise boat capsized, according to TOI. While Marina and Trishaan could not be saved, her husband, Pradeep Massey and their daughter Siya survived.

The photo shows the child was pressed against his mother's chest unlike the first image showing the woman clutching on to her son. “When we brought them out, they were still holding each other,” a rescuer told TOI.

Final moments of Jabalpur mother-child revealed

The officials tried to put the final moments believing that when the vessel began to sink in water, the mother made a rapid, instinctive decision and pulled the son to her chest. The mother till her last breath made the attempt to maximise the chances of his son's survival. But the two were inside the lower cabin, a small confined space that flooded within minutes, leaving no room for them to escape.

“In such enclosed compartments, once water ingress reaches a critical level, disorientation and pressure leave passengers with seconds, not minutes. Despite having a life jacket, the pair are believed to have been trapped before they could reach an exit,” said an officer who was part of the rescue operation.

The rescue officer said the position of the bodies indicates a final, conscious attempt by the mother to create a protective air pocket for her child as the situation rapidly worsened. It was an instinctive last effort, made in moments when there was little time to react, he added.
