The atmosphere of the much-awaited match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians has taken an emotional turn, fans across the country are eager to know the answer to one question – what? MS Dhoni Will finally debut in IPL 2026? As these two legends are set to face each other at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 2, the curiosity about Dhoni’s comeback remains the main focus of the story.
Impact of injury, MS Dhoni’s IPL 2026 start delayed
The 44-year-old CSK legend has been out of action since the start of this season due to a calf muscle strain. Initially it was expected that he would only miss the initial phase, but Dhoni’s recovery is taking longer than expected. As a result, the five-time IPL-winning captain has had to remain on the sidelines, focusing on rehabilitation and controlled practice sessions.
Despite his absence, Dhoni has been closely associated with the team, guiding the players and gradually returning to net practice. However, his match fitness — particularly his ability to run fast between the wickets — has been the primary concern for the team management.
Mike Hussey gives important fitness update about Dhoni’s comeback
Ahead of high-stakes clash, CSK batting coach Mike Hussey Gave a cautiously optimistic update on Dhoni’s progress. While he refrained from confirming his participation against Mumbai Indians, Hussey hinted that the experienced wicketkeeper-batsman is gradually moving towards full fitness.
“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or maybe the next match after that, but he’s progressing really well,” Hussey said during the pre-match press conference.
The former Australian cricketer insisted that Dhoni’s core cricketing abilities remain intact, with no concerns about batting or wicketkeeping. Instead, the focus is on recapturing the physical intensity required during match situations, particularly in the high-pressure phases of the innings.
Running fitness remains the final hurdle
Hussey revealed that Dhoni’s recovery has reached a stage where only one vital element needs to be completed — confidence in his running ability.
“He is increasing his running speed, and that was probably the bottleneck. We are very confident about his batting and wicketkeeping. It is just about making sure that he can maintain that running power, especially at the end of the innings,” Hussey explained.
In modern T20 cricket, quick singles and quick runs between wickets often make the decisive difference, especially in the death overs. For a player like Dhoni, who excels in finishing roles, this aspect becomes even more important.
Hussey clarified that the final decision regarding Dhoni’s comeback will entirely depend on the player. The franchise is keen to ensure that the experienced player returns only when he feels completely confident in his body.
“As soon as he feels confident in his calf, he will say yes. We are guiding him in that direction right now,” Hussey added.
