Trump Repeats Claim of “Stopping India-Pak Conflict with Tariff Threat,” India Rejects Again

NEW DELHI: Donald Trump has once again made a controversial claim regarding India and Pakistan, stating that he played a role in preventing a potential conflict between the two nations by threatening tariffs. India, however, has firmly rejected these assertions.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he has helped resolve several international conflicts, including tensions between India and Pakistan. According to him, the situation at the time was extremely tense, with the risk of escalation between two nuclear-armed nations.

Trump claimed that he intervened by warning both sides that the United States would impose tariffs if hostilities did not stop, after which the situation de-escalated. He also alleged that multiple aircraft were shot down during the conflict and that conditions had reached the brink of war before his involvement helped ease tensions.

India has categorically denied these claims. Official sources have reiterated that the ceasefire understanding was reached through direct military-level communication between the two countries, specifically via talks between their respective Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO).

According to the Indian side, the de-escalation followed strong military action in response to cross-border attacks, including strikes on terrorist infrastructure. After this, Pakistan reportedly called for reducing tensions, leading to a ceasefire agreement on May 10.

Trump has made similar claims in the past, which India has consistently disputed. While some statements have found support in Pakistan, India’s position has remained unchanged—that no external mediation or pressure played any role in the ceasefire.

At the highest levels, including statements in Parliament, India has maintained that all decisions were taken independently, in line with national interests.

Trump’s latest remarks have once again sparked international debate, but India has made it clear that it sees no truth in these claims.
