GB News paused their live coverage to discuss the latest headlines and it spelled bad news for the Prime Minister. It comes amid a grim week for Sir Keir Starmer with calls for his resignation after the lastest revelations in the Lord Mandelson scandal. The Labour leader has fiercely denied he deliberately misled lawmakers over Mandelson's appointment as US ambassador.
Starmer will not face a parliamentary investigation over claims he misled MPs, but trouble is still brewing as candidates bid for his role. GB News Senior Political Commentator Nigel Nelson discussed the divide within the Labour Party as Starmer continues to see threats to his position as PM.
Speaking on Friday's edition of the breakfast show, host Stephen Dixon commented: "Nothing is happening yet in terms of leadership but there is all this talk of 'anyone but Ange' campaign to keep Angela Rayner out of Number 10."
The Times reports Labour ministers and MPs have launched an "anyone but Ange" campaign in an attempt to keep the former deputy prime minister out of the leadership role after the local elections.
Some MPs reportedly fear the party is "sleepwalking" into a Rayner premiership. Nigel explained that despite this campaign she also has a lot of supporters.
Speaking on GB News, he continued: "Now we can see there is a bit of jockeying behind the scenes to replace Keir Starmer should he go. I want to stress there is no vacancy at the moment.
"The problem they have got at the moment is Andy Burnham isn't there so we haven't got the obvious contender in Parliament to take over from Keir Starmer."
The political commentator said the four contenders who could potentially replace Starmer include Rayner, Wes Streeting, who he described as "very credible, but now awfully popular within the membership".
Two more candidates include Ed Miliband and "dark horse" Yvette Cooper.
YouGov polling this week showed that only 15 per cent of the public thought Rayner would be a better prime minister than Starmer.
Some MPs have concluded that there needs to be a concerted effort to rally around one unified alternative candidate to stop Rayner entering No 10 if Starmer is forced out of office.
