The Delhi government has taken a major decision regarding private schools in Delhi. Parents will now be able to purchase books, uniforms, and stationery for private schools from any vendor of their choice. The Delhi government has taken this step to ensure freedom of choice for parents in this regard. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken serious note of the arbitrary practices of private schools and the increasing financial burden placed on parents. She has adopted a strict stance on this issue, warning private schools that if they coerce parents or engage in arbitrary behavior, they could face a government takeover. Furthermore, she has issued a clear warning that she may conduct surprise inspections at any school at any time.
Let us examine the decisions taken by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to curb the arbitrary practices of private schools in the city. Let us look at the specific directives she has issued to the schools.
**Schools Must Provide Clarification on Notice Boards**
The Chief Minister has directed private schools to clearly state—in writing—on their notice boards, websites, and within their premises (if the school operates its own store) that parents are free to purchase uniforms, books, and stationery from any vendor of their choice. She further clarified that in the event of any violation of these rules or the discovery of any irregularities, the government will take strict action against the concerned school—including a government takeover, if deemed necessary.
The Chief Minister explicitly stated that no parent can be compelled to purchase materials exclusively from the school itself or from any specific, designated vendor. While a school may suggest the names of a few shops for the convenience of parents, it may provide a list of no more than five or six options in writing; however, purchasing from these specific vendors will not be mandatory in any way.
**Strict Action Will Be Taken**
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed that this new system be implemented and enforced without fail, emphasizing that no laxity of any kind will be tolerated. In her message, the Chief Minister stated that this is not merely a routine directive, but a matter of extreme gravity. If any irregularities or malpractices are discovered anywhere, the strictest possible action will be taken against the concerned school, and—should the situation warrant it—the school may even be taken over by the government. She clarified that her visits for inspection are not a mere charade, but rather a genuine course of action being undertaken based on complaints and suggestions received from parents.
She stated that parents have written to her, indicating where she should conduct her next inspections; furthermore, she will continue to visit every location where complaints regarding irregularities are received. The Chief Minister added that if people have any further suggestions, they are welcome to send them. She reiterated that wherever irregularities exist, she will personally visit the site to assess the situation. It is the government's responsibility to set Delhi right, and every necessary step will be taken in this direction.
