Harbhajan Singh Security Case: Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court to contest the decision to revoke his security. He has filed a petition requesting the reinstatement of his protection, questioning the basis for the withdrawal and the reasons behind this decision.
In his petition, Harbhajan Singh referenced a serious incident where the word 'traitor' was allegedly written outside his residence. He accused certain individuals of causing a ruckus outside his home, attempting to create a hostile environment. He has called for strict action against those involved, stating that such occurrences pose a threat to his and his family's safety.
Court Seeks Responses from GovernmentsDuring the hearing, the court issued notices to both the Punjab and central governments, demanding their responses. The court instructed that Harbhajan Singh and his family's security be ensured until the next hearing. Additionally, the court inquired about the criteria used for the security review and the rationale behind the decision to withdraw it. They also requested a detailed report on any actions taken regarding the 'traitor' incident.
Order for Threat Assessment ReportFurthermore, the court directed the state government to present a 'Threat Assessment Report' for the record. The court aims to understand the level of threat assessed against Harbhajan Singh and whether this influenced the changes in his security. This aspect is considered crucial, as security decisions are typically based on threat evaluations.
Harbhajan Singh entered active politics in 2022, joining the Aam Aadmi Party. That same year, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab and was elected unopposed. He took the oath of office on July 18, 2022. Currently, he is engaged in commentary for the IPL and is in Mumbai. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for May 12, where the government will present its detailed arguments.
