Bridge where you can see four countries at once becoming 'bucket-list' destination

Holidaygoers are adding a rather unique destination to their bucket lists. The Kazungula Bridge, which crosses the Zambezi River between Zambia and Botswana, is the only place in the world where you can see four countries at once.

While Botswana and Zambia meet via the 923-metre bridge, both Namibia and Zimbabwe lie just metres away across the water. From the bridge and surrounding viewpoints, travellers can take in multiple international borders in a matter of seconds, making this a unique and must-visit destination for those visiting any of these countries. The bridge, which opened in 2021, has replaced a slow and unreliable ferry service, making the visit much easier for both tourists and residents.

Now, thanks to the bridge and faster border processing, travellers can plan multi-country itineraries with far greater ease.

Dr Mohanjeet Brar, travel veteran and MD at African safari camp provider Gamewatchers Safaris, explains that while this location may offer a unique experience, it's important to remember that you will be crossing at least one border, and so you should prepare properly.

He said: "This is exactly the kind of experience that sounds easy on paper but can quickly become complicated without proper planning. You're dealing with multiple border crossings, visa requirements, and varying wait times - all within a relatively small geographic area.

"The key is to treat it less like a spontaneous stop and more like a structured itinerary. With the right preparation, it can be one of the most rewarding travel experiences in Africa."

This handy bridge makes it easy to combine multiple must-visit destinations into one trip, such as Chobe National Park in Botswana with Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Zambia.

For those looking for somewhere a bit closer to home where you can step into multiple countries at once, there are plenty of options in Europe, including Drielandenpunt, where Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands meet, or Trojmedzie, where the borders of Poland, Slovakia, and Czechia meet.
