New Delhi . India has achieved another important achievement in the field of Maritime Security, which has given a new direction to the country’s defense capability. NASM-SR Missile developed with indigenous technology has been successfully tested, which makes the strength of the Navy more impressive. This test is considered to be a major change in modern maritime warfare strategy.
NASM-SR i.e. Naval Anti-Ship Missile Short Range is a short-range air-launched anti-ship missile, which has been specially designed to be launched from naval helicopters. Its biggest feature is its ability to aim accurately and its technique of flying very close to the sea surface, which makes it very difficult to be detected by radar.
During the test, the missile was fired from a naval helicopter and two missiles were launched consecutively within a span of a few seconds. This technique is called salvo launch, in which multiple missiles are fired simultaneously or in rapid succession to confuse the enemy’s defense system. This process greatly increases the chances of a successful attack on the target.
This missile is capable of hitting targets up to a distance of about 55 kilometers. Modern imaging infra-red technology has been used in it, which provides the ability to identify the target and destroy it with precision. Its speed is close to sound and it is capable of carrying heavy explosive warheads, which can cause serious damage to even large warships.
NASM-SR is completely based on indigenous technology, reducing India’s dependence on foreign defense equipment. This development is being considered a big step towards the country’s defense self-reliance. Earlier, India had to depend largely on external technology for this type of anti-ship missile capabilities.
