Modern medical science like IVF has till now filled the void of millions of couples who have been yearning to become parents. Many big personalities including common people have taken the help of IVF and surrogacy. In which many celebs including Shahrukh Khan, Nita Ambani, Nayantara, Priyanka Chopra are included in this list. But let us understand how surrogacy is different from IVF because some people consider it to be the same, whereas the processes of both are considered very different.
What is IVF?
IVF is also called test tube baby technique. In this, the woman’s eggs and male sperm are mixed in the laboratory outside the body. The embryo formed after fertilization is implanted in the uterus of the intending mother. If the mother’s uterus is healthy and she can conceive, then she gives birth to the child on her own. This process is especially useful for those couples who have not been able to conceive naturally or are facing problems in conceiving. Such as tube blockage, low sperm count, endometriosis or unexplained infertility. One cycle of IVF usually lasts a few weeks and includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer.
What is surrogacy?
In surrogacy, an embryo is created through IVF from the eggs and sperm of the intended parents, but it is implanted in the uterus of the surrogate mother. The surrogate mother conceives for nine months, gives birth to the child and after birth hands it over to the child’s parents. There are mainly two types of surrogacy:
Traditional: In which surrogate eggs are also used
Gestational: (Gestational), in which the surrogate has no genetic relationship with the child. Gestational surrogacy is considered more trending and safe nowadays.
big difference between the two
The biggest difference is that in IVF, the intending mother herself conceives, whereas in surrogacy, another woman (surrogate) conceives. IVF is used as a common treatment for infertility, while surrogacy is chosen when a woman cannot conceive. Such as absence of uterus, repeated miscarriages, serious health problems. IVF is relatively less expensive and less complex, whereas in surrogacy, legal agreements, search of surrogate, medical and emotional aspects are more complex. From cost point of view, surrogacy can be quite expensive. Both procedures give couples the opportunity to become parents, but the choice depends on personal health, financial situation and legal regulations.
IVF vs Surrogacy Success
Both IVF and surrogacy are solutions to the problem of infertility, but their success rates may vary. The success rate depends on many factors, such as the age of the woman, quality of the embryo, health condition and clinic facilities. The success rate of IVF in normal IVF is on average 40-55% in one cycle in young women (under 35 years). As age increases, this rate decreases. If donor eggs are used instead, the success rate usually reaches around 50-65%. Repeating multiple cycles may increase the overall success rate even further.
In surrogacy, the embryo is implanted in the uterus of the surrogate mother. The success rate is often better here. According to many reports, the pregnancy rate in surrogacy can be as high as 70-75%. Once pregnancy is achieved, the probability of birth of a healthy baby reaches 90-95%. Especially if surrogacy is done with donor eggs, the chances of success increase further.
How much does IVF and surrogacy cost?
Surrogacy involves many extra phases compared to IVF, so the total cost is usually higher. IVF involves only creating embryos and implanting them in the womb of the willing mother, whereas surrogacy includes the entire pregnancy care of the surrogate mother, legal work and other expenses.
cost of ivf
The cost of a typical IVF cycle in India can range from ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh. This includes medicines, tests, egg removal and embryo transfer. If donor egg or sperm is used, the cost may increase slightly. Sometimes, if more than one cycle is used, the total expenditure increases.
cost of surrogacy
The total cost of surrogacy in India can range from ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh. As per the rules of altruistic surrogacy, the main expenses involved are as follows:
IVF process: ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh
Surrogate mother’s examination, medicines and complete pregnancy care: ₹4 lakh to ₹7 lakh
Legal fees and settlements: ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh
