The upcoming film '29,' directed by Rathna Kumar, is gearing up for release on May 8. The film stars Vidu and Preethi Asrani in lead roles and is jointly produced by Karthik Subbaraj and Lokesh Kanagaraj . At the recent press meet held in Chennai, Lokesh Kanagaraj attended as a special guest and shared an emotional and inspiring speech about his journey and his bond with Rathna Kumar.
Lokesh Kanagaraj recalls struggles
Speaking at the event, Lokesh Kanagaraj began by recalling his early days with Rathna Kumar. “Rathna has always been like a competitor to me for a long time,” he said. He added, “We used to roam the streets looking for a chance to make our first film.” His words reflected the struggles both filmmakers faced before entering the industry. He also pointed out how things changed after a certain point, giving hope to many aspiring directors listening to him.
An untold story from Karthik Subbaraj's 'Pizza'
Lokesh Kanagaraj credited 'Pizza' as a turning point. “That film opened doors for many of us,” he said. He went on to thank Karthik Subbaraj for creating opportunities through his banner. “He didn’t just introduce Rathna, he introduced me too,” Lokesh shared. He explained how short films like 'Madhu' and 'Aviyal' got recognition through that platform. His speech clearly showed how important support systems are in the film industry.
Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals Kamal Haasan's inspiration
Lokesh Kanagaraj ended his speech with a strong message about giving back. “When we grow, we should also grow the people around us,” he said. He revealed that this thinking came from Kamal Haasan. “I learned from Kamal sir that what we earn from cinema should go back to cinema,” he added. Requesting support for '29,' he said, “Just like you supported my films, please support this one too.” His speech left a strong impact, highlighting gratitude, growth, and the importance of helping others in cinema.
