Heat intensity and health effects

Delhi and other states are currently facing extreme heat. Due to this heat the condition of people has become very bad. To avoid this, people are taking various measures. Hot winds, humidity, strong sunlight and high temperatures increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for people who work outside. Keeping this situation in mind, the government has issued guidelines to avoid the heat.

What to do to avoid heat stroke?

According to Dr. Naval Vikram, Professor of the Medical Department of AIIMS Hospital, Delhi, the number of such patients is increasing whose temperature reaches 106 to 107 degrees, which is called hyperpyrexia.

  • If you’re working outside, wear light clothing and keep your head covered.
  • If you’ve spent some time in the sun, take a break in the shade. This will bring the body temperature back to normal.
  • Keep drinking water at regular intervals. Drinking water will cause sweating, which will control body temperature. If you don’t drink enough water, you will sweat less, which will cause the skin to become dry and the temperature may rise. Make a habit of drinking water every hour.
  • Heat stroke patients are given IV fluids to bring down their temperature. Apart from this, water is also given by inserting a tube from the nose to the stomach.

What to keep in mind while eating and drinking?

According to Dr. Parmeet Kaur, chief dietitian of AIIMS, one should eat light food in this season. Avoid spicy things and include curd, buttermilk, mint chutney and wood apple juice in your diet.

Avoid eating excessive sweet, salty and fried food. Prepare ORS at home to keep the body hydrated.

How to take care of children?

Keep children drinking water regularly and give them low sugar foods. Keep them in a well-ventilated room and prevent them from playing outside. Take care to wear light clothes. If a child already has any disease, take special care of them.
