Siddapur: Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa visited the landslide site on Tuesday at Hulikal Ghat (Balebare Ghat) on State Highway-52, which connects Thirthahalli and Kundapur, and reviewed the situation following delays in restoration work.

The landslide had occurred on April 8 near a hairpin bend close to the Sri Chandikamba Temple while road-widening work was underway behind the temple. Three persons had died on the spot in the incident.

The minister’s visit comes 20 days after the accident, amid concerns over slow progress in repair work. He said reports have been sought from local authorities and the concerned department regarding the incident. He stated that negligence by the contractor and officials has been observed and assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted, and action will be taken against those found responsible. He also instructed officials to expedite the remaining work.

Local residents raised complaints against the contractor and officials during the visit. They alleged that the contractor lacks modern equipment and that there is a shortage of labour at the site. They pointed out that even after 20 days of the incident, work has not resumed. Residents also alleged that no case has been registered by the police so far and that engineers and officials had not inspected the site before the accident occurred.

According to the contractor, work is expected to begin this week and is likely to be completed between June 15 and June 20. After completion, the road will be opened for light motor vehicles.

Tahsildar and other officials, along with local residents, were present during the inspection.
