Dhananjaya, popularly known as Daali Dhananjaya, has carved his own path in the film industry, one that began far away from arc lights and film sets. Before stepping into the movies, the Kannada actor worked at Infosys, but a growing realisation about his true calling led him to take a bold leap of faith. Today, with a successful acting career and now an OTT production debut, Dhananjay looks back on that turning point, his journey through highs and lows, and his evolving creative ambitions.
Daali Dhananjaya on OTT debut with Jerax as producer
The actor has now entered the OTT space as a producer with the web series Jerax, which premiered on ZEE5 on April 24. Backed by his banner Daali Pictures, the series marks a huge step in his career. In an exclusive interview with The Economic Times, Dhananjay shared that the OTT medium offers a different kind of creative freedom compared to traditional cinema. He described it as an exciting space where stories can be explored in more depth and with greater flexibility. For him, producing Jerax was not just about telling a story but also about contributing to a growing platform that allows new voices to emerge.
The series itself shows that intention. He said, "Personally, I’m drawn to the genre of Jerax, a blend of comedy, thriller, and political satire. It’s something I enjoy as an audience member as well. When Srinidhi, a young filmmaker, first narrated the story, I was instantly hooked. I immediately called Pradeep and said we should move forward, and I also congratulated Srinidhi on the strength of his writing. In fact, my initial instinct was to develop it as a film, but when ZEE5 proposed it as a series, we were happy to take that direction."
For his OTT debut as a producer, Dhananjaya was clear about one thing: he wanted to back a story that stood out. Rather than focusing solely on genre, he prioritised a narrative that could hold the audience’s attention and offer something new. He credited Srinidhi’s writing for bringing that vision to life and expressed confidence in the filmmaker’s ability to execute it.
Dhananjaya's journey from working at Infosys to cinema
Beyond production, Dhananjay’s own journey into cinema continues to inspire many. He recalled how his love for acting began on stage during his early years, though he only fully acknowledged it while working in the corporate world. It was during his time at Infosys that he realised his true passion lay in performing. Choosing to leave a stable job was not easy, but his desire for creative freedom pushed him to take the risk.
"I’ve always been an actor. I grew up on stage, and it has been my passion since childhood. I realised it late, while working at Infosys. That’s when I knew I belonged in cinema. I value freedom and independence, and I understood that I’m an artist at heart. Performing on stage, hearing the applause, gave me confidence. I believed I could make a mark. So I left my job and took a leap of faith."
That decision eventually paid off. Dhananjaya made his acting debut with Director’s Special (2013), earning the Best Debut Actor award at the SIIMA Awards. Over the years, he has built an impressive body of work, winning multiple honours, including three Filmfare Awards South. His performance in Allama (2017), where he portrayed the philosopher-poet Allama Prabhu, received critical acclaim.
A major turning point came with Tagaru (2018), directed by Duniya Soori. His portrayal of the menacing character Daali became so popular that it turned into his widely recognised nickname. The role established him as a powerful performer capable of leaving a lasting impact.
Dhananjay also gained recognition among Telugu audiences for his role as Jaali Reddy in the Pushpa franchise. Reacting to the love he received, he said he was grateful that audiences embraced his character despite its negative shade. He believes that actors can avoid being typecast by constantly exploring different roles and showcasing versatility.
According to him, today’s audiences are perceptive and focus more on the character than the actor’s image. He added that his Telugu fans are aware of his work as a lead actor in Kannada cinema, which has helped them appreciate his range.
With Jerax marking a new chapter and more projects in the pipeline, Dhananjay’s journey from an IT professional to a popular actor-producer stands as a reminder that sometimes, taking a leap of faith can lead to the most rewarding destinations. Meanwhile, on the personal front, the Pushpa actor is expecting his first child with his wife, Dr Dhanyatha Gauraklar, as he announced it on his social media handle.
