A man has been charged with attempting to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Just moments before the incident, he took a selfie in his hotel room at the Washington Hilton, where the event was taking place. Reports indicate that the individual, identified as Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, was seen in the photo with a bag of ammunition, a shoulder holster, and a knife, according to a recent court filing.
As the gala commenced, Allen attempted to push through security barriers near the ballroom filled with journalists and guests, leading to a confrontation with Secret Service agents. He was apprehended after firing his weapon, officials confirmed. His attorney maintains that he is presumed innocent.
Authorities revealed that Allen was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, purchased last year, and a .38 caliber semiautomatic pistol acquired in 2023. Assistant US Attorney Charles Jones stated in court documents that Allen posed a significant threat to public safety, emphasizing his intent to kill.
During his first court appearance, Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh detailed three charges against Allen: attempting to assassinate the President, using a firearm in a violent crime, and transporting a firearm across state lines with the intent to commit a felony.
In response to the alarming situation, President Trump mentioned that he was initially unconcerned when gunfire erupted but soon recognized the gravity of the event alongside First Lady Melania Trump.
