Srinagar: People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday accused Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah of removing Urdu from the official records and said it was aimed at erasing the language from the collective history and culture of the region.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti said Abdullah is doing what the Lieutenant Governor administration and the BJP government have not done over the past few years. She referred to the two government notifications issued over the past year by the revenue department, headed by Abdullah himself.
"In July 2025, this government issued a notification stating that all revenue documents will be digitised in English language. Omar Abdullah tried to impose a Haryana type model (of digitisation) in J&K. Here revenue records are in Urdu for over a century now," said Mufti. She informed that the Abdullah government also changed the recruitment rules in the revenue department quietly in April 2026.
"They changed the SRO-74 rules stating that there is no need for Urdu proficiency for the recruitment of Patwari and Naib Tehsildar," said Mufti asking whether Abdullah was doing this at the behest of the BJP.
