Mumbai. Domestic markets closed higher on Wednesday in volatile trading amid strength in Asian markets and buying in consumer goods, auto and telecom stocks. BSE Sensex closed 609 points higher while NSE Nifty gained 182 points. BSE’s 30-share benchmark index Sensex jumped 609.45 points, or 0.79 percent, to close at 77,496.36 points.
At one point during trading it had climbed up to 1,095.6 points. At the same time, NSE’s 50-share standard index Nifty rose by 181.95 points or 0.76 percent to reach 24,177.65 points. Among the companies included in the Sensex group, shares of ITC Limited, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra closed higher.

Among other markets in Asia, South Korea’s Cospi, China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed with gains, while Japan’s markets remained closed due to holidays. According to analysts, better quarterly results and strong domestic demand supported the domestic market by diverting attention from geopolitical tensions.
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said, “Despite weak global cues and high crude oil prices, investors took advantage of the decline and made purchases.” Globally, Brent crude rose 2.85 percent to $ 114.4 per barrel.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Rs 2,103.74 crore on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought Rs 1,712.01 crore. In the last trading session, Sensex fell 416.72 points to close at 76,886.91 points and Nifty fell 97 points to close at 23,995.70 points.
