Two generations of the Shankar family are making waves internationally, as films associated with veteran actress Mamata Shankar and her son Ratul Shankar have officially been selected for the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal.
Bijoyar Pore , sarring Mamata Shankar, and
Pinjar , featuring music composed by Ratul Shankar, will be screened at the prestigious festival. This marks a rare mother-son cinematic moment on the global platform after many years.
The duo had earlier shared screen space in a film directed by the late Rituparno Ghosh, where Ratul played Mamata Shankar’s son. This selection now brings them together again and this time through their creative journeys.
Ratul has expressed his happiness at the news of sharing this international recognition with his mother. Mamata Shankar has also described this as deeply fulfilling. She also said that her son’s first film came through her and that too with Rituparno and again both of their works reached international festivals together. Ratul however prefers music to acting and his mother admires what he has been doing.
The selection not only celebrates individual achievements but also underlines a continuing artistic legacy—one that bridges generations and finds resonance far beyond Bengal.
