Has Govt Issued Order Of Hike In Petrol And Diesel Prices By Rs. 10 & Rs. 12.50? PIB Debunks Viral Claim

Amid rumours of a sharp increase in fuel prices, the Government of India has dismissed a viral document claiming a hike in petrol and diesel rates as completely fake, urging citizens to rely only on official sources.

The document, falsely attributed to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has been widely circulated on social media. It alleges that soaring global crude oil prices have forced the government to revise domestic fuel rates, citing rising procurement costs and mounting financial pressure on oil companies.

According to the fake circular, public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) were facing significant under-recoveries, claiming losses of Rs.24.40 per litre on petrol and over Rs.104 per litre on diesel. It further suggested that such losses were unsustainable and required immediate price corrections to maintain supply and financial stability.

The document even included a purported price revision table, stating:
  • Petrol (Motor Spirit): Rs. 10 per litre increase
  • Diesel (High Speed Diesel): Rs. 12.50 per litre increase

It claimed the order was to take effect immediately and carried a fabricated signature to appear authentic.

However, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has categorically rejected the claim. In a statement posted on X, it clarified that no such order has been issued by the government and labeled the circulating document as “#FAKE.”

Authorities have reiterated that there has been no official announcement regarding any fuel price hike. They have also urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information, warning that such misinformation can cause unnecessary panic and confusion.
