On April 29, US President Donald Trump delivered a pointed message to Iran, indicating that the nation would no longer be treated with leniency. He urged Iran to 'get their act together' and to 'get smart soon.' This warning was shared alongside a digitally altered image of Trump holding an assault rifle. In his post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump remarked, 'Iran can’t get their act together. They don’t know how to sign a non-nuclear deal. They better get smart soon!'
This statement followed Trump's assertion that Iran is 'in a state of collapse.' He noted, 'They want us to open the Hormuz Strait as soon as possible while they sort out their leadership issues, which I believe they will manage.'
Trump's warnings come in the wake of stalled negotiations between the US and Iran, particularly after the initial talks in Islamabad did not yield a deal. Reports suggest that Iran proposed to ease its control over the Strait of Hormuz if the US lifts its blockade and ends military actions in the region, delaying discussions on its nuclear program.
However, it appears that Trump is not inclined to accept this offer. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that any agreement excluding Iran's nuclear ambitions is unlikely. According to reports, Iran's conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz include: 1. Lifting the US blockade on Iran and its ports, 2. Ending military operations in the Middle East, and 3. Postponing talks regarding Tehran's nuclear program.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, through which approximately 20% of the global oil and liquefied natural gas supply flows. When questioned about Iran's proposal, Rubio stated, 'What they mean by opening the straits is that they are open only if you coordinate with Iran, seek our permission, or face severe consequences.' He emphasized that this does not equate to genuinely opening the straits, as these are international waters.
Rubio further commented on the proposal to delay discussions on Iran's nuclear program, asserting, 'If this radical clerical regime remains in power, they will eventually pursue a nuclear weapon. This fundamental issue must be addressed, as it remains central to our concerns.'
