Kodi: Salt water incursion hits wells and fields

Kundapura: Salt water has once again intruded into the fields and wells in the Kodi area under the local municipal limits. Like every year, the salt water problem remains unresolved, forcing residents to endure daily hardships.

Large quantities of salt water are flooding the fields, which has severely affected the wells of hundreds of nearby houses. The well water has become unfit for use, leaving residents entirely dependent on the piped water supplied by the municipality.

Crisis for Agricultural Land

The accumulation of salt water in the fields has hindered preparations for the upcoming monsoon cultivation season. Tasks such as cleaning the fields, applying fertilizer, and preparing the soil have been disrupted. Due to this persistent issue, many farmers in the area have been forced to leave acres of fertile land fallow.

Permanent Solution Remains Elusive

Fields adjacent to the backwater areas of Kodi are now completely submerged in salt water. This is not a new problem; it is a recurring nightmare for the residents every year. Over 25 acres of agricultural land along the riverbank, stretching from the Kodi Chakreshwari Temple premises to Soans School, are affected annually.

More than 50 farmers are suffering because the vented dams (kindi anekattu) built between the river and the fields are in poor condition, allowing water to seep through. Residents have urged for a permanent solution, such as constructing a proper river embankment to prevent salt water from entering the land.

No Response from Authorities

"Last year, frustrated by the salt water problem, we protested in front of the municipal office by carrying pots of salt water. At that time, the municipality promised to take appropriate action. A year has passed, yet no solution has been provided. Even though we have brought the current situation to the attention of municipal officials, there has been no response," said Ashok Poojari Kodi, a local resident.
