Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently observed the Vikramaditya Vedic clock installed within the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex in Varanasi during his visit. The clock, which has been developed as part of an initiative promoted by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, has been positioned as a representation of traditional Indian timekeeping practices rooted in Vedic astronomy.

The installation was presented to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earlier this month and was subsequently placed at the temple complex. It is based on the concept of time measurement from one sunrise to the next, rather than the conventional midnight-based system used in global standard timekeeping. Along with displaying time, the system is designed to provide additional information such as planetary positions, daily auspicious timings, and elements of the Hindu calendar.

The concept originates from scholars associated with the Maharaja Vikramaditya Research Chair in Ujjain, a city historically linked to ancient astronomical studies. The clock was earlier installed at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain before being introduced in Varanasi.

Supporters of the initiative argue that it reflects indigenous scientific traditions and offers an alternative perspective on time calculation, while critics and observers often view it within broader discussions about cultural representation and scientific standardization, particularly in relation to globally accepted systems like Greenwich Mean Time.

The initiative has gained visibility due to its placement at prominent religious sites and the involvement of senior political leaders. Its expansion to other locations continues to generate interest in both cultural and scientific circles, highlighting ongoing debates about traditional knowledge systems and modern timekeeping frameworks.
