Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva, Board Resign; Interim Body Takes Over
Cricket Gully | April 29, 2026 6:39 PM CST

In a significant turn of events, Sri Lanka Cricket president Shammi Silva has stepped down, along with several other board members and the Executive Committee, as of Wednesday. This resignation follows the T20 World Cup 2026 co-hosts' disappointing exit from the tournament during the group stage, compounded by serious allegations of corruption and political meddling against the administration.

According to the news agency AFP, Sri Lanka's membership was suspended by the ICC in 2023 due to claims of political interference, but it was reinstated in January 2024.

Sri Lanka Cricket Officials Step Down

A press release from Sri Lanka Cricket revealed that Silva, along with other office bearers and Executive Committee members, submitted their resignations to the country's president. An AFP report mentioned that president Anura Kumara Dissanayake met with Silva over the weekend to discuss the board's future under new management.

“The President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Shammi Silva, has tendered his resignation from the post, effective today. Along with him, the office bearers and members of the Executive Committee of the SLC have also submitted their resignations. This decision has been formally communicated to His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Honorable Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage,” SLC said in a statement.

The AFP report also indicated that the new committee will be led by an interim management team, headed by an investment banker who is also an opposition politician. Shammi Silva reportedly called a special meeting to announce his resignation, even though he had 11 months left in his four-year term. The report suggests that he encouraged the current board to resign and allow a new administration to take over.

Now, Sri Lanka Cricket is entering a critical rebuilding phase after Silva and the entire board's resignation following the T20 World Cup 2026 disappointment. An interim committee is expected to step in, with the goal of stabilizing operations and restoring credibility.

The focus will be on tackling corruption allegations, ensuring transparency, and rebuilding trust among players, fans, and global stakeholders as Sri Lanka Cricket moves forward.
