Indian Companies Under Hackers' Crosshairs; Government Agency Issues Alert..
Shikha Saxena | April 29, 2026 12:15 PM CST

India's premier cybersecurity agency, CERT-In, has issued a high-severity alert for businesses across the country—particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The agency has warned that next-generation AI models are making cyberattacks faster, smarter, and more dangerous than ever before. Powered by Frontier AI, hackers can now autonomously identify vulnerabilities, analyze code, and launch large-scale attacks with minimal human intervention. Consequently, companies are in urgent need of bolstering their cybersecurity defenses. CERT-In has specifically advised the MSME sector to remain vigilant.

**Frontier AI Reshaping the Landscape of Cyberattacks**
In its advisory titled "Defending Against Frontier AI-Driven Cyber Risks," issued on April 26, CERT-In noted that advanced AI models have evolved into incredibly potent weapons for cybercriminals. These systems can automatically discover software vulnerabilities, analyze source code on a massive scale, and execute multi-stage attacks. While such attacks previously required specialized expertise and considerable time, AI now enables their execution with unprecedented speed. This has significantly lowered the barriers to entry for cybercriminals.

**The Looming Threat over MSMEs**
According to CERT-In, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are particularly vulnerable targets for this threat. This is primarily because most small businesses lack a robust cybersecurity infrastructure. The agency has advised such organizations to adopt advanced threat detection systems, continuously monitor their networks, and securely maintain detailed logs of all system activities. AI-driven attacks can be highly sophisticated and stealthy; therefore, timely preparation remains the most effective defense.

**Take These Essential Steps for Security Immediately**
CERT-In has urged organizations to prioritize timely software updates and patch management. Since AI tools can identify vulnerabilities with extreme speed, any delay in applying fixes could prove costly. Furthermore, adopting secure coding practices and conducting regular security audits are essential measures. The agency has also recommended implementing an AI-aware security framework capable of detecting machine learning-based attacks. Log preservation has also been deemed mandatory to enable a comprehensive understanding of all activity in the event of an attack, thereby limiting the damage.
