New Delhi: To reduce tension with America, Iran has made a new proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz, but America has adopted a tough stance regarding the nuclear program. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has clearly said on this proposal that there will be no compromise on the issue of nuclear weapons.

What is Iran’s new proposal?

Iran has said that if America lifts the blockade on its ports, it is ready to stop the war and immediately open the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran says that the nuclear issue can be discussed later. The White House said that President Donald Trump’s National Security Team is considering this proposal. Trump himself will take the final decision.

Rubio’s tough answer

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave a blunt answer in an interview to Fox News and said that any agreement with Iran should be such that it completely stops it from making nuclear weapons. Rubio said, “I have no doubt that if the current regime remains in place in Iran, it will definitely try to acquire nuclear weapons in the future. So this is the most important issue for us.”

He also said that Iranian negotiators are very clever. They are making such proposals to buy time, but America will not leave them easily. Any deal will include strict conditions for not making nuclear weapons.

America’s stance

America seems to be in no mood to make any compromise on nuclear security. Rubio made it clear that Iran will not be given any freedom to pursue its nuclear weapons program. This proposal has come at a time when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is on a visit to Russia. However, Russia’s role in this proposal is not clear.

At present the Strait of Hormuz is a very important route for the world’s oil exports. If it remains closed, it could have a major impact on global oil supply and prices. It still remains to be seen how much America accepts this new condition of Iran and in what direction the talks between the two countries move forward.
