The Madhya Pradesh High Court has adjourned the ongoing legal proceedings concerning OBC reservation to mid-May, setting the next hearing dates from May 13 to May 15, 2026. The court made this decision during a hearing on Tuesday to allow for the consolidation of all petitions, ensuring a comprehensive review of the matter.
The session began at 11:00 AM but was adjourned after the court noted that one of the key petitions filed directly with the Supreme Court had not yet been transferred to the High Court for combined consideration. Reports indicate that of the four petitions filed with the Supreme Court, one was missing from the files currently before the local court.
The High Court highlighted the constitutional significance of the case and stressed the importance of hearing all legal challenges together in order to avoid fragmented judgments. The court indicated that this collective approach is necessary for delivering a fair and thorough verdict on the reservation quota.
Speaking to ANI, Supreme Court Advocate Shashank Ratnoo confirmed the rescheduled hearing dates and expressed hope that the May session would mark the final hearing in the case. “The next dates are May 13, 14, and 15. We are hopeful and expect that this will be the final hearing of the case,” he said.
The dispute concerns Madhya Pradesh’s decision to increase the OBC reservation from 14% to 27%, a move challenged on grounds that it exceeds the total reservation limit and conflicts with constitutional provisions. The case remains one of the most politically sensitive issues in the state, affecting thousands of government job applicants and students.
Legal experts and stakeholders anticipate that the hearings in May could conclude the years-long contention over the percentage of reservation for Other Backward Classes in state services and education, potentially establishing a new socio-political precedent for Madhya Pradesh.
