Emmerdale fans are buzzing with speculation that Andy Sugden could be set for a dramatic return to the Dales.

Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) first graced the soap's screens back in 1996, and it wasn't long before the village heartthrob cemented himself as a firm favourite amongst devoted viewers.

During his time on the show, Andy found himself at the centre of countless high-octane storylines. From a string of ill-fated romances to fathering Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) with Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), life in the Dales was never dull for the troubled character.

After years of upheaval, Andy ultimately fled the village in 2016 following a sinister plot in which he was framed for the accidental shooting of Lawrence White (John Bowe) by Chrissie (Louise Marwood).

With the assistance of half-brother Robert (Ryan Hawley), Andy managed to go on the run. He has not been seen since, but according to eagle-eyed fans, that could all be about to change, reports the Daily Star.

As viewers will be aware, Sarah recently became a mother after her grandmother and surrogate Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) gave birth to her and Jacob Sugden's (Joe-Warren Plant) daughter, Leyla.

However, the scheming Dr Todd (Caroline Harker) resorted to blackmail after discovering that Jacob is not Leyla's biological father, pressuring Charity into convincing Jacob to withdraw his complaint against her.

Jacob duly dropped the complaint, but with further turmoil on the horizon, fans are convinced Andy Sugden could ride back into town to bring Dr Todd to justice. "Bring Andy Sugden back to stop Dr Todd," declared one viewer on an Emmerdale Facebook fan page.

Another viewer concurred: "Yes most definitely." Adding to the chorus of agreement, a third watcher commented: "Loved Andy, he would be great to help Sarah and Jacob."

During a previous appearance on This Morning, Kelvin revealed the genuine reason behind his decision to quit Emmerdale. In conversation with presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, he said: "Twenty years is a long time. It's been an incredible twenty years.

"I am so grateful to Emmerdale. Throughout that period I have always had a real sense of fulfilment and purpose. He went on to explain that he'd stumbled into acting and it had never been a lifelong dream."

He added: "What started out as a hobby at six years old - I was then able to do something like that every day on a professional platform on one of the country's greatest shows. I have been extremely lucky. Looking back over 20-years it has been a rollercoaster and for me it's given me passion to leave and continue."

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX
