Meharaj Malik, a legislator from the Aam Aadmi Party, was released today from Kathua Jail after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court annulled his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Following his release, Malik expressed his commitment to continue addressing the concerns of the public. The detention order issued by the district magistrate of Doda on September 8 last year was overturned by Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani, who instructed the authorities to release the petitioner immediately.
Malik's lawyer and AAP spokesperson Appu Singh Salathia informed reporters that after completing all necessary formalities, jail officials released Malik this morning.
Supporters Celebrate Malik's Release
As the gates of Kathua Jail opened this morning, dozens of supporters rallied outside, chanting slogans in favor of Malik, dancing to drumbeats, and adorning him with flower garlands. Upon his release, Malik reiterated his determination to fight for the rights of the people. He stated, "Now that I am out of jail, I express my gratitude to the judiciary for delivering justice. I will continue to raise the issues faced by the public."
Background of Malik's Detention
It is important to note that Meharaj Malik was detained last September on charges of disturbing public order under the PSA and was subsequently held in Kathua Jail. He filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court on September 24, challenging his detention and seeking compensation of five crore rupees.
