Aadhaar Card Update: The UIDAI has clarified that the Aadhaar card serves solely as proof of identity and address, not as proof of date of birth, as the DOB recorded therein is based on information provided by the user or is an estimated value.

UIDAI Update on Aadhaar Card: While the Aadhaar card is an essential document in today's times, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified that it serves as proof of identity, but not as proof of date of birth. The UIDAI conveyed this information in a letter addressed to Aadhaar User Agencies (AUAs) and e-KYC User Agencies (KUAs).

Why Will It Not Be Accepted as Proof of Date of Birth?

The UIDAI has clarified that the primary objective of the Aadhaar card is to authenticate an individual's identity, not to verify their date of birth. The date of birth recorded in Aadhaar is based on the information provided by the user at the time of enrollment or during an update. In many instances, this information may be an estimated value or a self-declared entry. If an individual does not possess valid supporting documents, the system automatically records January 1st as the default date of birth, based solely on the year of birth provided. For this reason, it cannot be considered proof of an exact date of birth.

Aadhaar Only Confirms Identity – UIDAI

According to the UIDAI, the Aadhaar card ensures that the individual presenting the card is indeed the same person who originally registered using their biometric data. The authentication process confirms only the identity of the individual; it does not verify the date of birth or other personal details.

Agencies May Exercise Discretion in Usage

The UIDAI further stated that AUAs and KUAs are at liberty to decide—in accordance with their own respective regulations—whether or not to utilize Aadhaar for any specific purpose. Decisions regarding the use of Aadhaar in welfare schemes, subsidies, and other government services are taken by the concerned ministries and state governments.

For Which Purposes Is Aadhaar Valid?

The UIDAI has reiterated that all forms of the Aadhaar card—including the physical card, e-Aadhaar, Masked Aadhaar, and the QR code—remain valid as proof of identity and proof of address. However, this will not be considered proof of date of birth in itself.
