New Delhi. Bowling brilliantly with the new ball under the leadership of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (three wickets for five runs in three overs) and Josh Hazlewood (four wickets for 12 runs in 3.3 overs), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowled out Delhi Capitals for 75 runs in 16.3 overs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 match here on Monday. In the last match against Punjab Kings, they achieved their highest score of 264 runs for two wickets. This is the third lowest score in the IPL by the Capitals team which scored big.
Abhishek Porel made the maximum contribution of 30 runs for the team. Apart from them, only David Miller (19) and Kyle Jamieson (12) could score runs in double figures. The Capitals batsmen had no answer to Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar’s Test match-like balls swinging outside the off-stump and the team lost six wickets for nine runs in the first three overs. After the powerplay, Capitals’ score was 13 runs for six wickets.
This is the lowest powerplay score in IPL. Earlier, Rajasthan Royals had scored 14 runs for two wickets against RCB in 2009. When invited to bat first, the Capitals had a very bad start. On the very second ball of the innings, experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled the debutant left-handed young batsman Sahil Parakh without opening the account, while Hazlewood dismissed Lokesh Rahul (one) and Sameer Rizvi, who were in excellent form, on the first two balls.
Tristan Stubbs (five) prevented Hazlewood from completing his hat-trick by hitting a four against Hazlewood, but Bhuvneshwar dismissed the South African batsman and then captain Akshar Patel (zero) on the first ball of the third over and sent half of the Capitals team to the pavilion for seven runs. After this, Capitals had to use the impact player in the third over itself, when Porel came to bat in place of Parakh but Hazlewood got Nitish Rana (one) caught by Padikkal, due to which the team lost six wickets for eight runs.
The brilliant bowling of Hazlewood and Bhuvneshv can be gauged from the fact that the Capitals batsmen could hit only one four in the power play. Porel ended the boundary drought of 28 balls by hitting a four against Rasikh Salam in the seventh over, while Miller also reduced the pressure by hitting a second four in the same over. He then completed 12000 runs in the T20 format by stealing one run.
When Miller hit two fours against Salam, it seemed that the Capitals’ innings would be back on track to some extent, but he played the ball in the air and Jitesh took an easy catch, breaking the partnership of 35 runs in 31 balls. After this, there was a slight interruption in the game due to a dust storm. Along with the dust, pieces of raw cotton, paper and cloth also started flying and falling on the field, but the umpires decided to continue the match.
Jamieson completed the team’s half-century of runs in the 11th over by hitting the first six of the Capitals’ innings off Romario Shepherd. However, he was trapped LBW by Krunal Pandya. With two wides from Suyyash Sharma, Delhi crossed its lowest score in IPL history in the 14th over of the innings. Suyyash Sharma gave the ninth blow to the Capitals by bowling Kuldeep Yadav (three), while Hazlewood ended the Capitals’ innings by dismissing Porel.
