If you own an Android phone and have suddenly noticed a huge drop in performance, you are not alone. A concerning bug is affecting some devices, with many users reporting that their phone batteries are draining rapidly even when idle. The issue appears to have started after a recent software update. As spotted by the team over at 9to5Google, many Android users have taken to online forums to complain, with one person saying they now need to charge their phone three times a day just to keep it running.

So, who is affected?

The problem appears to be affecting Google's Pixel smartphone lineup, with the company acknowledging the issue and investigating a fix.

Models reportedly affected include:

Pixel 10 Pro XL

Pixel 9 Pro XL

Pixel 9 Pro

Pixel 8 Pro

Pixel 7A

What's causing it?

9to5Google suggests the bug may be linked to excessive CPU wakeups. This means the phone continues running background processes even when the screen is off and the device is not being used, leading to significant battery drain.

What are users saying?

Many owners say the problem is severe. One user, Phil, wrote: "Pixel 7A - both my phone and my wife's have had this issue since mid-March. Phones suddenly go from 20% to 0, are slow to charge and batteries drain while switched off."

Another user, Fz, added: "My Pixel 9 Pro XL battery drain started after the March update. Now I need to charge my phone three times daily. Overnight, even without using it, the battery drops heavily. I charged it fully before bed and woke up to only 30%."

And Cyan said: "Yes, my Pixel 9 Pro XL has been having a major battery drain issue over the past few weeks. Been driving me crazy having to carry around a battery bank with me everywhere I go.

However, not every Pixel owner has been affected. A user named Warren reported:

"Pixel 9 Pro, and no apparent battery drain here. At 6:30am it was fully charged. At 3:20 this afternoon, it's at 79%."

What happens next?

Google is expected to identify the cause and release a software update to resolve the issue soon. More details are likely to follow once the company provides an official update.
