Beyond his on-field leadership when Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026, Shubman Gill made headlines off the field too. On Sunday, GT got the better of CSK at Chepauk to rise to the fifth position in the points table. The skipper may not have made too many runs, but his leadership was paramount in the victory.
Bowling first on a brisk track, Gill's effective utilization of his pacers was the order of the day. Rabada took 3 wickets, while Arshad Khan accounted for two dismissals. Siraj and Manav Suthar chipped in with a wicket each. Gaikwad captained CSK into their innings and played a superb unbeaten 74 to help the Chennai based outfit amass 158/7.
In the chase, Gill and Sai Sudharsan laid a foundation for GT with a partnership worth 58 runs for the opening wicket. The skipper scored 33 runs from 23 deliveries and was dismissed thereafter. This paved the way for an effective partnership between Sudharsan and Jos Buttler. They were eventually steered home comfortably by Buttler and Washington Sundar.
Gill's Viral Post and Ananya Birla's Reaction
Later in the night after the match, Gill took to Instagram and shared a picture which immediately went viral. He was seen sitting on a flight holding a yellow whistle in his hands, and this was undoubtedly a shot at the 'whistle' of CSK. The fans perceived it as a blatant troll by Gill, and the former became a topic of discussion on social media platforms.
The Instagram post received further traction as Ananya Birla re-shared it. The co-owner of RCB and head of Birla Estates also owns the principal sponsors of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2026.

Fan Responses & Old Controversy Revisited
Following Birla's response, there were memes galore. Some fans appreciated Gill and the joke whereas others supported CSK.
Apart from these fan reactions, it also resurrected a very recent controversy. CSK made a complaint to the BCCI regarding RCB earlier in IPL 2026. This took place after an insult hurled by the DJ in M. Chinnaswamy stadium on April 5 against CSK during a match.
There is no personal relationship between Gill and Ananya Birla. This relation of theirs is mostly professional since Birla Estates sponsors Gujarat Titans and even the Aditya Birla Group paid $1.78 billion for RCB.
Speaking of the team's form, GT have had a somewhat successful run so far winning four games out of eight. The top order batting of the team comprising of Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler have performed well. However, the middle order is not yet sorted out.
Next up, GT will be playing RCB in Ahmedabad on April 30.
