Amidst the tension in West Asia, a news has come to the fore for superpower America which has created a stir from the Pentagon to the White House. A recent intelligence report (quoting NBC News) claims that Iran’s retaliatory attacks have caused more damage to US military bases than expected. This loss is so deep that it has raised serious questions on America’s operational capability in the Gulf region.
THAAD’s stock runs out, defense shield weakened
One of the most shocking figures of the report is to America’s missile defense system. It is being told that America has spent about 40 percent of its state-of-the-art THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missiles deployed around the world. The irony is that it takes years to make these missiles, whereas in a war situation, they get destroyed within a few days. It is clear from this that America’s ‘defense line’ can collapse in a long drawn out war.
‘Superpower’ helpless in front of Iran’s ‘low-cost’ strategy
Iran has used very cheap but deadly technology in this war. According to the report, while America is losing its expensive missiles, Iran is attacking with cheap drones and accurate missiles. US bases in seven countries were targeted in the attacks since February 28.
Details of damage caused:
- Critical infrastructure: Military warehouses, command centers and aircraft hangars have been badly affected.
- Communication Block: Satellite communication systems and radar systems have been damaged, weakening surveillance systems.
- Airstrip: The flight of aircraft has been affected due to damage to the runway and several military aircraft.
- In a shocking incident, an old Iranian F-5 fighter plane managed to penetrate America’s state-of-the-art air defense and attack, exposing the shortcomings of American air defense.
Increasing expense burden and Trump’s difficulties
This military conflict has also put a heavy burden on America’s economy. The Pentagon has sought additional funding of $200 billion to compensate for this conflict. The thing to note is that in the very first week of the war, about 11 billion dollars was lost.
Here, President Donald Trump seems to be under siege on the domestic front. Republican lawmakers have expressed displeasure over the lack of transparency. MPs say that when the government is demanding a record defense budget of $ 1.5 trillion (50% more than last year), then why are they not being given accurate information about the losses?
