New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) endured dismal outings on the double header Sunday as both teams lost their respective matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. CSK suffered a crushing 8-wicket defeat against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the afternoon game before LSG lost in a Super Over against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
CSK’s batting woes were left exposed once again at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as they suffered a terrible collapse. CSK were reeling at 37/4 at one stage, but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 74 off 60 balls and cameos from Jamie Overton and Shivam Dube helped them post a moderate total of 158/7 on the board.
However, the total didn’t prove enough as GT made light work of it to complete the run chase with 22 balls to spare and secure a commanding victory. In the second game of the day, Lucknow Super Giants lost to KKR in a Super Over after the scores were tied. A las-ball six from Mohammed Shami helped LSG equal KKR’s total of 155 runs to take the game into a Super Over.
However, LSG’s decision to send Nicholas Pooran to bat in the Super Over backfired as the hosts could only manage 1 run at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Pooran and Aiden Markram were dismissed on ducks apiece as LSG recorded the lowest score in a Super Over in the history of IPL. KKR chased down the target of 2 runs on the very first ball of their Super Over to win the game.
How can CSK qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?Chennai Super Kings are currently in the sixth spot on the IPL 2026 points table with six points after eight matches in IPL 2026. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side has endured a topsy-turvy run in the tournament so far. CSK suffered three straight defeats in their first three games of the season and have since lost three more in their next five games.
However, the five-time champions are still alive in the race for the playoffs. CSK need to win at least five of their remaining six matches in the IPL 2026 to reach 16 points, which will be enough for them to book a spot in the playoffs. They might qualify with 14 points as well, but will need the results of other teams to go in their favour.
How can LSG qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?LSG’s playoff chances look slim after their Super Over loss against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. The Rishabh Pant-led side is languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with only four points after eight matches this season. LSG will need to win all of their remaining six matches to be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.
However, it will take nothing less than a miracle for them to qualify amid their current struggles. LSG can also make it to the playoffs with five wins in their remaining six games, but they will need some of the other results to go in their favour. While they are still alive in the race for the playoffs, their chances are hanging by a thread.
